5 best woodchippers for your homestead

WHAT IS THE BEST WOOD CHIPPER FOR YOUR HOMESTEAD?

The best woodchipper for your property depends on the type and amount of trees present on your property. For some a 3″ Chipper/Shredder will do the trick. For others, a 5-6″ woodchipper will be needed, and for those lucky enough to have a tractor a pto driven woodchipper will be a valuable tool for your homestead or small farm. This post should help you decide which woodchipper best suites your needs.

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY A WOOD CHIPPER?

The woodchips create a valuable resource for our homestead. As compared to just clearing brush and either burning it in a slash pile or sending it to the landfill. We can use it for many things around the homestead. Like helping with the mud around in and around our driveway. To line paths in our garden and around the house. For a natural mulch on garden beds and flowers. And for the flooring in our chicken coop and chicken run. We our trying to be more self-sufficeint , and the more we can utilize natural resources from our land the better!

THINGS TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A WOOD CHIPPER.

There are three main types of wood chippers. Electric, Gas, And pto driven. For smaller jobs around the yard an electric woodchipper will be great at chipping branches up to 2″.  Chipping branches up to 3″ and finely shredding leaves and small twigs will be best handled by a small gas powered chipper shredder. If you have a large forested property Or you just have a lot of trees you need chipped, you may need to step up to a 5-6″ gas powered woodchipper or pto unit.

You need to think about the size and amount of material that you need woodchipped, and the amount of money you want to spend on a product.

best overall wood chipper

powerking 5" 14 hp wood chipper

After doing all my research this is the Chipper that I decided to purchase. It has worked very well for me. I use it to chip up alot of Twisted Pinon pine and juniper trees. I like that I can put large twisted branches in the chute and chip them with ease. It is great for my 45 acre heavily forested property. Despite being 400+ lbs you can move it around pretty easily on flat ground. Thankfully there is a hitch to haul it around the property on the 4-wheeler or truck. I recommend purchasing the Extended wheelbase  and 2 spare blade package. The extended wheelbase makes it very nice for uneven terrain, and you will not regret having some sharp blades to switch to once you where out the originals. The directional chip chute makes it nice to put shoot the chips into your wheelbarrow or truck bed. Overall this has been an amazing machine for me I would definitely recommend it.

DK2 power Atv towable 3″ Chipper shredder

If your are looking to Chip smaller branches and twigs up to 3″ you will want to look into the dk2 power Atv towable 3″chipper shredder. Perfect for small farms where you need to be able to move the chipper around to different parts of your property to chip and clean up yard debris. While not able to handle as big of branches as the 5″ chipper above, this has the advantage of being able to shred smaller material into finer bits.  Some people simply do not need such a big chipper but still want to buy a quality piece of equipment that will last them a long time. If the branches you are trying to chip are pretty straight, this would be a great wood chipper for you. I only purchased a larger unit because the branches I’m trying to chip are extremely twisted. I usually try and save anything above 3″ for firewood anyways.

WHAT I LIKED

  •  Kohler command pro 7 hp 208 cc engine
  • Easily shreds leaves and small twigs with top load shredder
  • Fits branches and small trees into large 3″ chute opening
  • Removable 7/8″ tow bar for moving around the property
  • directional chip chute
  • Cost  $1000 dollars at time of writing
  •  Heavy duty steel construction
  • dot approved tires

WHAT I DIDNT LIKE

  •  small loading chute makes it hard to fit twisted branches

This will chip branches up to 2 1/2″ and will shred your leaves to a fine mulch. This unit draws 14 amps of electricity, Perfect if you have things to chip within 100 ft of a power source. Being electric is nice because you don’t have to worry about changing oil or filling with gasoline. 1. Thanks Kylee. The chipper is pretty heavy to move on hills and uneven ground, but with two people it isn’t bad. It does have a hitch so you can tow it as close as you can to where you are chipping.
